The Lottery Twist That Has One Maple Leafs Prospect Thinking Ahead
Ben Danford is eyeing a Leafs roster spot and already thinking about Gavin McKenna joining him after Toronto lands the No. 1 pick.
Ben Danford’s trying to make the Toronto Maple Leafs roster next year. And now that his team has scored the No. 1 pick, he’s hoping Gavin McKenna will be coming with him. He thinks McKenna will go first, and that’s exciting.
Like everyone else, Danford was stunned by the lottery win. He was out for dinner when he saw the news on TV and couldn’t believe it. He’s hyped not just because the pick’s huge for the club, but because he actually knows McKenna from World Juniors and thinks they’d click — on and off the ice.
What Does Danford Think of McKenna?
Danford’s short scouting report on McKenna? Pure praise: elite hands, great skating, smart play, and a killer shot. He’s basically saying McKenna’s got everything you want in an offensive superstar and would slot right in with the Maple Leafs’ young core — Matthew Knies, Easton Cowan and Danford himself.
There’s another name in the mix — Ivar Stenberg, who won gold with Sweden and brings a more rounded, physical style. But Danford watched the tape, likes what he sees, and is excited about adding top-end skill to a team that’s itching for youth and balance. Stenberg is good, too.

Either Player Comes at a Good Time for the Maple Leafs
It’s a dynamic time in Toronto. The roster’s up in the air, management’s juggling stuff, and a new crop of kids could flip the team’s whole vibe next year. Danford’s realistic about having to fight for a spot, but teaming up with a possible generational player? That’s what every prospect wants.
If McKenna does join and Danford fights his way onto the roster, you’ve suddenly got a core with speed, skill, and some real chemistry already baked in from international play.
Bottom line? Danford Is Pumped to Line Up Beside McKenna
Danford is realistic about the work he needs to do, and he’s ready to compete. He’s not calling dibs on anything, just saying McKenna’s the kind of player that would make the Maple Leafs’ future feel a lot brighter. If that happens, he’d be excited to be part of that.
If Toronto really does end up with a young group that clicks, next season could get a lot more interesting, fast. From Danford’s perspective, he sees it as a huge chance for the Maple Leafs, and he wants to be part of it.
