Carolina Hurricanes
Teams Out There Bidding on Top UFA “Gonna Have to Look in Another Direction”
The Carolina Hurricanes are close to signing John Carlson, meanings teams that wanted to bid on his in free agency will have to pivot.
The deal isn’t done until it’s done, but teams that were out there hoping to be bidding on UFA defenseman John Carlson on July 1st are “gonna have to look in another direction.” This, according to NHL insider Chris Johnston, is trending in the right direction when it comes to Carlon’s signing with the Carolina Hurricanes.
It could be a fascinating day for the Carolina Hurricanes, who are juggling multiple possibilities on the blue line. The team is exploring a potential deal for Carlson while also weighing trade scenarios involving Alexander Nikishin.
With $11.105 million in cap space and only a few roster spots to fill, Carolina is in a position to make noise—and it sounds like they might. The defense market is heating up quickly. Toronto is believed to be pushing hard for Zach Werenski, and the Hurricanes aren’t believed to be in the race there.

Meanwhile, they could still be active on Connor Hellebuyck, even though most insiders have the goaltender more likely going to the Buffalo Sabres.
Did the Hurricanes’ Gamble on Carlson Pay Off?
The Hurricanes made a savvy move acquiring Carlson’s rights ahead of free agency, but signing him was not a given. The 36-year-old defenseman is seeking a two-year deal at $10 million annually. The Tampa Bay Lightning were also keen to talk to him, but they may have their sights focused on Werenski.
The defenseman is eager to win and stay in the East. Carolina offers both opportunities. As the defending Stanley Cup champions, they have most of their team coming back next season.
