Taylor Hall Open to Short-Term Deals in NHL Free Agency

If Taylor Hall is now willing to talk short-term deals with teams in NHL free agency, what does that means for where he’ll land?

During Saturday’s home version of the Headlines report for Hockey Night in Canada, Chris Johnston of Sportsnet noted that there’s been a change in the way winger Taylor Hall is looking at the NHL free agent market. Formerly believed to be only open to a long-term deal, that is apparently no longer the case.

Johnston notes that Hall will entertain one or two-year deals when the market opens and specifically said, “Any interested team is going to be given a chance to make a proposal to him.” He added that teams will get a chance to present their offers and explain how they see him fitting in, what he might do for their team, why it makes sense for him to consider them. Johnston called the decision by Hall and his agent a smart one given the uncertainty of the financial economics in the NHL.

It’s also a great decision for hockey fans who want to guess as to where the winger will land.

This Opens a Lot of Doors for Hall

If Hall is willing to look at shorter-term options, there will immediately be teams in the running that potentially weren’t before. Whether that be the Colorado Avalanche who some believe are willing to drop big money next season but need to keep their options open long-term, or the Edmonton Oilers who could offer a chance to play with Connor McDavid and see Hall elevate his numbers looking to strike it big on his next deal, the rumors will come in hot and heavy.

For Hall, this will mean carefully selecting a destination that works, because his long-term financial future may depend on it.

There would have only been a handful of teams willing to take a shot at Hall if he was thinking six years or more before in a tight salary cap market. Now, he could be in the conversation for a number of teams who have space this coming season or the willingness to make room to try him out on the short-term.
