Tape2Tape: Is Rittich Worthy of MVP Consideration

It wouldn’t be fair to say that David Rittich came out of nowhere for the Calgary Flames – after all this is the third season in which he’s appeared in an NHL game.

While some people believe David Rittich has come out of nowhere for the Calgary Flames, he’s actually in his third season. The difference this year is that he’s becoming a household name for fans of the NHL.

Why is that? In Calgary, where the team is at the top of the Pacific Division and Western Conference, he’s been an incredibly important piece on their run.

David Rittich: The Numbers

Now 26 years old, the question to ask is whether or not Rittich should be the Flames starter come playoff time. Having made appearances in 34 games this season, Rittich has a 20-5-5 record with a 2.66 GAA and .911 SV% to go along with his first career NHL shutout.

How He Compares to Mike Smith

Mike Smith has not been the answer for the Flames which has opened the door for Rittich.  In Smith’s 28 games so far for Calgary, he’s 14-11-2 and houses a woeful .891 SV% and 3.06 GAA.
