Tactic or Truth?: Red Wings Reveal Decision on Simon Edvinsson
Shawn Horcoff has publicly made up his mind about Simon Edvinsson, but is this the truth or a tactic ahead of a trade?
The Detroit Red Wings are not looking to trade Simon Edvinsson. Despite the lack of a contract extension and trade rumors surrounding the unsigned defenseman, interim GM Shawn Horcoff told the media this week, “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson.” He adds, “Not something I’m entertaining. We want to sign him.”
So now what?
NHL insider Chris Johnston recently noted on TSN Insider Trading that Edvinsson has returned to North America. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a new deal is imminent. “He wants to work for a trainer back in North America that he feels comfortable with…. Not necessarily a sign that there’s been a breakthrough on the contract front, but the fact that he is coming back does symbolize some good things.”
Still, Horcoff sounds optimistic. Despite a reported “preference to be traded” by the defenseman, the Red Wings are adamant they can get this deal done. And there are indications Horcoff might not be wrong. He just signed his first big deal as a GM, inking Alex DeBrincat to a seven-year deal worth $91 million ($13M AAV). That was an important signing, and Horcoff noted that Edvinsson is as important to the team. He has been in constant contact with his agent.
Elliotte Friedman also reported, “The other thing I was told about him is that I think Horcoff himself has worked with him [Edvinsson] personally on his development up through the organization, so Horcoff is especially convinced about the value of the player.”
Is This a Tactic?
One fan on X wasn’t buying what Horcoff was selling. “Exactly what a good GM does to increase his value for a trade. As much as I think they need Simon, he doesn’t need them and will probably ultimately get traded as other teams get more desperate.” Another wrote that if this was going to get done, it would be done by now. “Yet, he’s still not signed, and it’s been very widely reported that Horcoff has been in trade talks regarding Edvinsson. Rookie attempt at playing hardball through the media by Horcoff here. Even I see straight through this one.”

Then again, maybe Edvisson will see the DeBrincat deal and start to pivot on his preference to be moved. It is being reported that he’s not opposed to signing an extension; it’s just that the numbers aren’t close. Unlike Dylan Larkin, this isn’t about Edvinsson’s desire to be a Red Wing. He’s more in the DeBrincat camp. DeBrincat recently said, “I really believe in what we’re trying to build here….I’m a Red Wing at heart.”
Is Edvinsson feeling the same way and just needs the organization to get to the number he thinks is fair?
