Insider Names Replacement Options For Rangers With Shesterkin Out
Igor Shesterkin is out for the season, and the Rangers are exploring goalie options. Insider Darren Dreger says a few names are out there.
With Igor Shesterkin done for the season, the New York Rangers are searching for goaltending help, and a few names have surfaced as possible replacement options. Can the Rangers make a trade that works or are they prepared to run with their inexperienced tandem of Dylan Garand and Spencer Martin?
NHL insider Darren Dreger said on the Ray & Dregs Podcast that the Rangers have “kicked tires” on Maple Leafs backup Anthony Stolarz. They’ve also looked at Jordan Binnington in St. Louis, Philipp Grubauer in Seattle, and Sam Montembeault in Montreal.
Toronto recently committed to Sergei Bobrovsky on a three-year deal, and Stolarz has become the backup there. The Leafs like the tandem, but they’re suddenly dealing with holes on the blue line. Stolarz’s injury history and inconsistency may create a situation where GM John Chayka is open to moving him, as long as Toronto can fill the hole behind Bobrovsky cheaply.
Meanwhile, other options are out there for the Rangers, if they’re open to spending assets to get what they need.
Rangers Aren’t Panicking Yet
Dreger said GM Chris Drury is scouring the league, but without urgency. New York wants to see what Dylan Garand can do first.
In St. Louis, it’s too early for the Blues to consider moving Jordan Binnington.

Sam Montembeault could be an option, Ray Ferraro suggested, and Dreger agreed.
Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets is not. Both hosts ruled him out because of the contract and what it would mean for the cap once Shesterkin returns. New York doesn’t want $20 million tied up in two goalies after this season, nor are they interested in taking on a contract they can’t move later. Not to mention, adding Hellebuyck creates an issue when it comes to determining who the starter would be. It’s likely not Hellebuyck, so how happy would he be as a backup after this season?
Whoever the Rangers add needs to be cheaper and shorter-term.
