Strome and Blackhawks Not Close on a New Deal Yet

The Chicago Blackhawks and forward Dylan Strome are not exactly close on a new deal. How important is to get that deal done?

The Chicago Blackhawks have one big item remaining on their to-do list for this offseason, which is to secure a contract extension with restricted free agent Dylan Strome. So far, that’s not happened, and according to Scott Powers of The Athletic, it’s not all that close to happening.

While the two sides are confident they will get a deal done, when it comes negotiations between Strome and the team, they’ve been practically non-existent. Powers writes, “doesn’t sound like anyone is in a hurry to get it done yet.”

This isn’t ideal considering Strome offers a lot to the team. He’s young, he’s a center and he’s a decent scorer — is 89 points in 116 games follow only Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Alex DeBrincat for the Blackhawks over the last two seasons. He makes a player like DeBrincat better and the Blackhawks are already a bit upset with management over some of their offseason choices.

Because Strome has arbitration rights, Powers notes that the team hasn’t made signing Strome a priority. They wanted “to square everything else away this offseason before focusing on Strome,” he adds.

What Will a Deal Look Like?

There are a few ways the team and the player can go when they do get to talking. Powers believes Strome may shoot for a short-term contract. While Strome’s 12 goals and 26 assists this past season wasn’t as productive as the season prior (51 points in 58 games), it wasn’t terrible either. Still, he may want to have an up year while he tries to secure something more long-term.

There’s a benefit to Strome signing for one season if he has confidence in his ability to produce again. Should he continue on his fairly strong pace, he’ll head into another contract extension conversation with arbitration rights and a strong case for a massive raise.
