Staios Breaks Silence, Reveals Truth Behind Brady Tkachuk Trade Request

Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios spoke with the media and revealed the truth behind what happened that led to the Brady Tkachuk trade.

For months, both Brady Tkachuk and Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios called it nonsense. There was no truth to the Senators captain wanting out of Ottawa. He was happy. The team was headed in the right direction. Brady was committed. How quickly things change, and now, Staiso is telling a different story.

The Ottawa Senators president and general manager faced reporters Monday morning for the first time since shipping captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers in one of the most notable trades of the offseason. And for the first time, Staios confirmed what the rumor mill had been circling for weeks: his captain wanted out.

Brady Tkachuk Did Request a Trade

When asked what changed, Staios said plainly, “A trade request changed.” He added, “For me, I could clearly see that Brady was a bit of a different player from a year before… So, probably not overly surprised at that point.”

Staios had previously waved off trade speculation and called it ‘nonsense’, but that was before he was informed that his superstar captain had changed his mind about his long-term future. There was always noise around Tkachuk. The Senators and Staios were prepared to try and manage it. But once it became clear that Tkachuk’s heart wasn’t in it and he was no longer among the Senators players committed to winning in Ottawa, a trade was inevitable.

The two sides in New Jersey last month. It was believed that Staios had asked his captain about his plans when his contract came up in two years. Reports suggested that the Senators started looking around because the answer wasn’t reassuring. It appears to have been more than that. Tkachuk wanted a trade and submitted a list of teams he’d be willing to accept a trade to. The response included the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, and Carolina Hurricanes. However, Staios quickly learned there was really only one destination. “It was clearly pointed at one team at the end,” Staios said.

The pull of playing alongside his brother Matthew in Florida — the pair having just won Olympic gold together in Milan-Cortina earlier this year — was what Brady wanted. The other teams were really just part of the conversation, but not a serious one. If anything, it was meant not to throw Brady under the bus, the optics of it all, and to potentially give the Senators a little leverage in their talks with the Panthers.

The Senators and Panthers finalized a deal Sunday, sending Tkachuk to Florida in exchange for the ninth and 25th picks in this week’s draft, a conditional first-rounder in 2029, and a second-round pick in 2027. Staios hinted he was negotiating with limited leverage given Tkachuk’s no-move clause. He said, “I feel I got the best deal the Ottawa Senators could get under the circumstances.”

Staios Isn’t Letting The Senators Take a Step Back

He also pushed back on the idea that this trade reflects poorly on Ottawa as a destination. “If you think people don’t want to play in Ottawa, that’s not the case. This is a unique situation if you see where he was traded.”

Staios was obviously disappointed. He wasn’t about to throw shade at his former captain, however. “There was no animosity… I would have loved to see it through with Brady.” Unfortunately, “I think it became clear as the season went on that maybe something was amiss.”

Now Staios shifts to what comes next. Reports indicate the Senators have been linked to names like Mason McTavish, Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust, and a top-four defenseman as they look to turn those picks into players. Interest in the ninth and 25th selections has already been described as “robust,” and Staios made it clear that he intended to be aggressive. “I have no intention of this group taking a step back.”

Tim Stützle and Jake Sanderson remain the pillars of Ottawa’s core as the franchise tries to prove it can compete without its captain. The plan is to find a player or two who can join them and believe in what the Senators are building.

The truth is out there now. Brady Tkachuk asked to leave. His GM obliged. It’s up to the Senators to make the most of a situation that has changed.
