Original reports of a trade came from TSN’s Shawn Simpson, host of the Ottawa-based sports radio station TSN 1200. The two sides were apparently talking about a deal for a while and the Sens were able to take some salary from the Coyotes while adding what they hope will be strong leadership in player that costs very little in terms of real dollars – accounting for just $2 million in actual salary while holding a cap hit of $6.5 million. A $3M signing bonus has been paid out.

The Coyotes said goodbye to Stepan in an official statement on their website:

“On behalf of the entire Coyotes organization, I would like to thank Derek for everything he did for the Coyotes the past three seasons,” said Armstrong. “Derek is the consummate professional and a class act. We wish him and his family all the best in the future.”

Stepan recorded 28 points with 10 goals and 18 assists in 2019-20. He played in 70 games. In three seasons with the Coyotes, he’s tallied 39 goals 117 points over three seasons with the team.

This 2021 second round draft choice was previously acquired by the Senators from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Feb. 23, 2019.
