Which No. 1 Goalie Will Seattle Kraken Select During Expansion Draft?

The Seattle Kraken will have the luxury to pick a number of good players during the NHL expansion draft. Can they land a top goalie?

The Seattle Kraken are bound to get some good assets when they pluck their players from 30 other NHL clubs in a few months. But, can they grab a No. 1 netminder in the expansion draft? The Golden Knights grabbed Marc-Andre Fleury and he helped lead the team to the Stanley Cup Finals in year one. What goaltender can the Kraken pluck from a team that can’t protect him?

According to Luke Fox of Sportsnet, that answer appears to be Matt Murray of the Ottawa Senators.

Fox writes in a recent post where he makes 10 predictions on the upcoming NHL season that the thrifty Senators made a $25-million commitment to Matt Murray after the goalie’s sub-.900 performance in 2019-20, and that caught many by surprise. But, part of the reason the Sens may have felt the risk was worth the reward was because if Murray didn’t pan out as expected, he might still have a strong enough season that the Kraken want him as their top goaltending choice.

It helps too that one of the Senators goaltending prospects is showing extremely well.

Fox writes:

Sens GM Pierre Dorion would be wise to expose Murray in the Seattle expansion draft and instead protect 22-year-old Filip Gustavsson, who’s shining in Sweden and whose prime will align with that of Ottawa’s emerging core.

Is Murray Too Expensive?

The Kraken would be committing to a $6.25 million goalie for three seasons, but it’s not like the team doesn’t have the cap room to make that move. If they believe he can backstop their first few seasons with success, the franchise will be starting from a blank slate when it comes to their salary cap.

Fox adds, “Not unlike Vegas in 2017, Seattle will get a proven, name-brand starting goalie with Stanley Cups on his resumé — and the team its plucking from will save some dough.” Perhaps, if the Senators are keen on Murray being selected, they even offer a bit of a sweetener to Seattle to look the goaltender’s way.
