Kraken’s Trade Ask For Expansion Draft Side Deals Incredibly High

If opposing NHL teams want to make side deals with the Seattle Kraken, they’d better be prepared to pay a hefty price.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, if you want to do business with the Seattle Kraken ahead of the NHL Expansion Draft, you better be willing to pay a hefty price. With teams looking to move salary or protect their own players, Kraken GM Ron Francis knows that he’s got all the leverage in the world and his intention is to take advantage of it.

LeBrun reports that he’s hearing that the ask from the Seattle if another NHL team comes to do a side deal is incredibly high. In fact, opposing GMs are a bit shocked at how high the ask is. LeBrun writes:

Hearing from team execs around the NHL that there’s still some sticker shock to what Kraken GM Ron Francis wants in return on side deals for teams with protection issues who want some certainty now… tick tock. The poker game is on. One month away.

For other GMs, it might just be best to let the draft unfold as it will. When the Vegas Golden Knights joined, these side deals often didn’t work out well for the teams that made them and the Golden Knights became immediate contenders, getting all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural year. For example, the Florida Panthers ended up leaving Jonathan Marchessault exposed if Vegas would agree to take Reilly smith. Columbus traded a 1st and a 2nd to make, only so Vegas would take William Karlsson.

Meanwhile Francis has nothing to lose and everything to gain by setting a high price. This year, more than when Vegas joined the NHL, teams are absolutely pooched on salary. Regardless of the price, there will be some teams that agree to make a terrible deal just to get out from under their own internal issues in a flat cap era.

Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the team has a third interview scheduled with former Arizona Coyote head coach Rick Tocchet. By most accounts, it sounds like Tocchet will be the man.

LeBrun noted that he wasn’t yet comfortable calling this decision a lock, but all signs seems to suggest Tocchet will be the first coach of the expansion franchise.
