Scribe Examines Bruins Dealing Brad Marchand to the Oilers
The Athletic’s Allan Mitchell looked at the idea of Brad Marchand coming to the Edmonton Oilers in trade. Is there any chance?
Allan Mitchell cautioned fans of the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday to take his column with a bit of, well, let’s say, open-mindedness. He writes, “This is an article about the Bruins dealing Brad Marchand at the deadline to the Oilers. Outrageous to even suggest such a thing, but The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa addressed the possibility earlier this week.”
Following Shinzawa’s look at why the Bruins might trade Marchand, Mitchell goes on to talk about how the Oilers and Bruins are two teams headed in different directions. The Bruins could be sellers, and the Oilers are definitely buyers. He adds that Marchand would be close to a perfect fit for the Oilers. Suggesting Edmonton is light on physical wingers; few are better than the Bruins captain.
He’s disruptive, plays on the edge, and has a ton of heart. These are all things the Oilers could always use more of. “He’s a nightmare for opponents,” writes Mitchell. At times, the Oilers are too easy to play against, despite their incredible skill. While he’s older, he’s still helpful, and the plan would be to use him in certain situations, mainly focused on five-on-five and penalty-killing assignments. He’s a Selke nominee and still gets talked about each year the voting comes around.
Marchand Would Be a Long Shot for the Oilers
But, for fans intrigued by the idea, Mitchell also adds, “Edmonton has some assets to offer in trade, but other teams may be willing to give more to rent the skills of Marchand for a few months. Why?”

The cost to land Marchand would be one of Edmonton’s top prospects. They include Matt Savoie, Sam O’Reilly, Beau Akey, and Maxim Berezkin. Edmonton would also have to be willing to give up a first-rounder, but Mitchell writes, “It’s unlikely Boston management would view draft picks as a worthwhile centerpiece for Marchand. A plug-and-play option would seem more likely.”
That might require getting a third team involved since the Oilers don’t really have a young player the Bruins might covet.
As was pointed out before… this idea is a long shot. But, if you were the Oilers and the opportunity arose to pursue such a deal… would you?
