Sam Bennett a Healthy Scratch For Flames Again… Trade Unavoidable?

Sam Bennett is a healthy scratch again for the Calgary Flames. Are things to the point now where a trade is unavoidable?

At this point, how can a trade not be coming that will see forward Sam Bennett moved by the Calgary Flames? Despite all the talk about him being a better playoff performer, with one point in his last nine games, Bennett has been made a healthy scratch again on Thursday night.

The Flames will take on the Ottawa Senators and Darren Dreger of TSN reports that, based on a coach’s decision, Bennett is out.

It wasn’t more than a couple of weeks ago that GM Brad Treliving talked with media about the fact they, as an organization, would determine the fate of a player. Whether he comes, goes, plays or doesn’t play, the Flames weren’t about to allow Bennett or his agent to dictate his future while under contract with the team. Essentially, if the Flames thought a good option was out there, they’d look at it. If it wasn’t, they wouldn’t.

Over the course of the season, Bennett’s ice time has varied dramatically. In some cases, he can get as low as just over six minutes in a game. Four games ago, against the Maple Leafs, he got 16:04. All that said, he’s got four points on the season and things are not at all alright.

Pull the Plug Already

The longer this drags out and the more times the Flames sit him, the lower Bennett can fetch in return. At this point, there might still be a team or two that believes he can turn things around. But, if the fit isn’t right in Calgary, it’s less and less likely he goes on a run, at least not one enough to up his value.

The fourth overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft, the Flames can likely get some other team’s poor contract back as part of a deal. A change of scenery for both players might be best.
