Bruins’ DeBrusk Not Available in Trade Now, Could Be Soon

He might not be available now, but how long before the Boston Bruins consider trading Jake DeBrusk?

Despite his name being out there and some fans in Boston calling for the Bruins to look at trading forward Jake DeBrusk, The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa says he’s not being shopped around or made actively available in a trade. That doesn’t mean he won’t be, as Shinzawa suggests a source expects to see that day come sooner than later.

Shinzawa cites one NHL assistant general manager who claims the Bruins have told (or are telling) inquiring teams that DeBrusk is not actively available. But, he also notes another NHL source who believes he can see a situation where the Bruins shop the 24-year-old winger and eventually move him.

Shinzawa writes that moving DeBrusk now could further downgrade an area of need for the Bruins which is secondary scoring behind Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak. It’s not ideal for the Bruins to weaken an area of need, even if DeBrusk is not being terribly productive — one goal and four points in 15 games.

But, if the Bruins do move the player, Shinzawa predicts the goal will be to get a similar style forward back or switch gears and target a much-needed defenseman. He writes:

The Bruins would have to pursue a hockey trade for a like-minded forward or left-shot defenseman — young, high ceiling, underperforming for whatever reason.

Something Might Have to Give

As the scribe points out, this is just DeBrusk’s first season of a two-year, $7.35 million bridge deal. His lack of production was not anticipated when the team signed him to said deal.

He’s been bothered by an injury, so it’s worth taking that into account, but it doesn’t explain how little he’s offered a Bruins team that is still playing fairly well despite his lack of contributions. And, the coach isn’t letting him off the hook. “The onus falls on the player, no matter who your center is or other winger, just to line up and play hockey,” Cassidy said.

The good news is, his totals will go up. He’s 1-for-32 in shots this season. A 3.1% shooting percentage has to get better.
