Sabres Looking to Trade For Additional Depth Following Injuries

The Buffalo Sabres have suffered a couple setbacks on their blue line and GM Kevyn Adams says they are trying to make a depth trade.

Buffalo Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams told reporters including Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, that after losing both Mattias Samuelsson and Henri Jokiharju to injuries, the franchise might look for some additional help. Samuelsson will miss several weeks and Jokiharju is week-to-week with a facial fracture after being hit with the puck.

Adams said the team is considering adding an NHL-level defenseman that can provide some additional depth. It’s not going to be a big move but the Sabres do have plenty of cap space with which to work and that leaves a number of options open, especially if other teams are open to throwing in a sweetener to entice the Sabres to take on money.

Adams will only go so far, however. Because the team has big contract extensions coming up with Tage Thompson and they won’t be far removed from needing to set aside some big money for Dylan Cozens, Rasmus Dahlin, and Owen Power, the Sabres can only afford to add a player that has a contract that expires at the end of this season or next.

Harrington writes:

With Kale Cleague called up from Rochester and the Amerks losing both Chase Priskie and Peter Tischke on defense to week-to-week injuries, the organizational depth on the blueline is being severely challenged. The Amerks re-signed veteran Brandon Davidson to a tryout contract and Adams said the Sabres are on the lookout for more help on defense, including a possible addition on the NHL level.

Adams says he’s been looking at a number of options around the league but one thing he says he won’t do is make an emotional move. “What we won’t do is make a big reaction-type move or emotional move,” he noted. “But if we think something makes sense that we could provide a little more depth in the organization, not where what it costs is we’re giving up assets, then maybe that’s something we’ll look to do.”
