With rumors swirling Malkin’s name might have been brought up in trade talk, one scribe shoots that talk down.

We reported yesterday that conflicting reports suggested Jim Rutherford’s exit from the Pittsburgh Penguins had something to do with ownership squashing a trade attempt. Colin Dunlap of 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh tweeted that Rutherford was working on a deal to move Kris Letang while Rob Rossi of The Athletic disputed that report. Another scribe has weighed in on the discussion, this time taking aim at rumors about Evgeni Malkin.

While Letang was the center of the rumors in the previous report, Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now noted that Malkin’s name was also allegedly out there when it came to Rutherford’s exit, but says the rumors of any squashed trade for either Letang or Malkin aren’t true.

Kingerski writes:

There was clearly something he [Rutherford] didn’t like, but the public theories don’t line up. … Rutherford used the Mark Madden radio show on the Penguins flagship radio station to call rumors that he resigned over trying to trade a star “farfetched.”

Trade Talk About Malkin Would Have Leaked

Kingerski says that if there was trade speculation surrounding Malkin, people would have heard about it by now. When the Florida Panthers had kicked tires on the center in the summer of 2019, everyone knew and there was nothing more than quick conversation about it. Multiple outlets reported at that time the response from the Penguins was that Sidney Crosby, Malkin, and Letang should be allowed to retire with Penguins if they choose.

Rossi reports that the situation hasn’t really changed and that the priority for any new GM and for the Penguins is to get these veterans signed, especially Malkin. At the very least, give them the option.

There’s no telling how the three veterans will feel about sticking with the team as it shifts directions. If any of them want out, it’s an entirely different situation.
