Predators’ Roman Josi Claims 2020 NHL Norris Trophy

Roman Josi is the NHL’s 2020 Norris Trophy Award for Best Defenceman.

The James Norris Memorial Trophy goes to Roman Josi as the NHL’s best defenseman. He wins the award after an incredible 2019-20 campaign.

During the first half of the 2019 NHL regular season the on-going Norris chatter was directed at the Washington Capitals star, John Carlson. In mid-December of 2019, Carlson had accumulated 45 points in 33 games and would finish with 75 (15G, 60A) in 69 games. Considering the shortened season, those numbers guarantee the Norris in most years! Not in 2020.

That is not to say the eventual winner, Roman Josi, did not deserve the Norris but rather shines light on an excellent class of nominees. The third nominee, 2017 Norris winner Victor Hedman, is the only one of the three candidates still playing hockey. Hedman has developed into one of the leagues premier two-way defenders. A great defender, Hedman also managed 11 goals and 44 assists (55) over 66 games. Still only 29, Hedman likely still has a few more Norris nominations ahead.

Josi’s Day for Norris

The eventual Norris winner, as virtually announced by three-time Norris winner Paul Coffey, was Nashville Predator franchise player Roman Josi. The Swiss born sensation has had a consistent ascent, from a 2nd round pick in 2008 to the leagues Top Defenceman. His consistency over the 2020 season was a factor in his offensive production resulting in 16 goals and 49 assists (65) over 69 games.

Born and raised in hockey-crazed Bern, Josi becomes the NHL’s first major award winner from Switzerland. The Predators selected Josi as the 38th overall selection in the 2008 NHL draft – he has remained with the organization since. Heading into his 10th NHL season, Josi has been a steady offensive contributor for the Predators. In 632 career games with the Nashville Predators, Josi has produced 109 goals and 304 assists (413). Nashville GM, David Poile announced Josi as the 8th captain in franchise history (2017).

Certainly a big day for Josi and the Predators, but all of Switzerland too!
