Cale Makar Calder Trophy Winner 2020

Consider the NHL’s top rookie for the 2019-20 season, Colorado Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar takes home the Calder Trophy as part of this season’s award ceremonies.

Makar was considered the league’s top rookie after the 21-year-old defenseman led NHL rookie blueliners in goals (12) and power-play goals (four) in 57 games this season. He is the sixth player to win the award in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history, joining Peter Stastny, Peter Forsberg, Chris Drury, Gabriel Landeskog, and Nathan MacKinnon.

“I’m extremely honored and humbled to accept this Calder Trophy,” Makar said. “I can’t give enough thanks to each and every one of my Avalanche teammates. Honestly, I owe them a ton of credit for my success this season and it’s a pleasure to compete with those guys.”

While some were wondering if Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes might stand a chance of taking home the honors, the voting wasn’t actually all that close. Makar received 116 votes to Hughes 53.

Chicago Blackhawks forward Dominik Kubalik also got some serious consideration.

Makar Will Be a Star

This has to be considred just the start of things for the defenseman who seems to have unlimited potential. His ceiling is about as high any defenseman to come into the league in a long time and the Avalanche should be thrilled to know he’ll be running their back end for years.
