Robin Lehner Wants to Stay With Golden Knights
Despite questions about free agency after this season closes, goaltender Robin Lehner says he’d like to talk to the Golden Knights about signing an extension.
The goaltending situation in Vegas is an interesting one to watch. There are questions about who will start and who will finish. How long the team will go with the hot hand considering the club has two bonafide starters and, what happens when the season is done?
The Golden Knights picked up goaltender Robin Lehner at the trade deadline in what some considered a surprising move. A great idea on paper turned into a potentially wasted decision when the NHL went on pause and the chances of Lehner leaving in free agency remained high.
Now, the Golden Knights may have gotten some good news on that front.
Danny Webster of NHL.com writes that despite all the talk surrounding Lehner and his status as a pending free agent, Lehner is hopeful that he’ll have some conversations about remaining with the team beyond this season.
Lehner said:
“I’m sure we’ll have some discussions after the season and see what happens. I really like it here. Great team, great organization, great group of players. We’ll see what happens. You never know, but it’s a very good impression here so far.”

Who Gets the Start?
Beyond the long-term questions about how much money the team can afford to invest in a goaltending tandem, there are immediate questions in Vegas as well. Specifically, who gets the start during the playoffs?
Some speculation is that Lehner is actually the netminder the Golden Knights will look to over Fleury. Despite Fleury taking the team to the Finals in their inaugural season, Lehner had better regular season numbers this past campaign and Fleury has not been taking part in the Golden Knights recent on-ice skates at training camp.
It is being described as “Not COVID related.”
If Lehner does get the nod, could the Golden Knights possibly look to move Fleury in the offseason?
