Rangers Give D-Man Jones Permission to Talk Trade with Teams

According to Elliotte Friedman, the New York Rangers have granted defenseman Zac Jones permission to speak with other NHL teams.

According to Elliotte Friedman, the New York Rangers have granted defenseman Zac Jones permission to speak about a possible with other NHL teams. Friedman shared this update in the latest edition of his 32 Thoughts blog. The hope is that Jones can find a new team and earn a consistent opportunity to play in the NHL.

Friedman’s Trade Report on Jones

Friedman didn’t provide extensive details about Jones’ situation but highlighted one potential obstacle that could deter some teams:

“There’s interest, and he’s good enough to take advantage of a new opportunity. One caveat: since he’s not a big guy, teams with a smallish blue line are an unlikelier destination.”

Jones, 24, was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft but has yet to secure a regular role in the NHL. He has appeared in 94 games for the Rangers over five seasons, recording four goals and 21 assists. This season, he’s played in 26 games and has registered one goal and seven assists for eight points.

Can Zac Jones Find a Spot on A Different NHL Roster?

There is potential for Jones to become an everyday NHL defenseman. In the 2022-23 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, he posted 34 points in 54 games. What he needs now is an opportunity—and the leash to make mistakes and grow. Without that, he risks being limited to the role of an NHL call-up.

Sometimes, players making the jump to the NHL simply need more time. The Rangers aren’t in a position to give Jones that time, which is likely why his agent is working the phones to find a new opportunity. However, any deal must make sense for both teams.

For example, Jones’ agent could line up a chance with a team like the Utah Hockey Club (hypothetically), but if the trade doesn’t provide mutual value, the Rangers won’t pull the trigger. Until a viable deal emerges, Jones will remain with the Rangers—or wait until he hits free agency.
