Provorov Not Eyeing Trade from Blue Jackets, But Something Else
Ivan Provorov’s name is coming up in trade rumors but he’s not looking to be moved by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He wants something else.
Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Ivan Provorov appears content to stay put, despite his name circulating on trade bait lists. In his recent column for The Athletic, Pierre LeBrun reports that Provorov is not actively seeking a trade.
Provorov’s agent, Mark Gandler, confirmed the defenseman’s commitment to Columbus, stating:
“Ivan is happy to be in Columbus, happy to play there. He thinks that the team is going to go places. It’s clear that the team is better than it was last year. Personally, I have all the confidence in the world in (general manager) Don Waddell’s ability.”
Provorov Would Rather Sign an Extension
Gandler also emphasized that Provorov sees the Blue Jackets as a team on the rise and is open to signing an extension. It’s not clear what he’s looking for on a new deal — he’s currently making $4.725 million in the final year of his deal — but it sounds like he’s willing to make it work. But, he might have to make a choice. LeBrun writes, “Whatever number (and term) the Jackets are comfortable with will almost surely be different than what the July 1 market could provide Provorov.”
One thing that might entice Provorov to give a little something in negotiations is the chance to stay near his younger brother. He recently joined Ohio State.
However, if the Blue Jackets fall out of playoff contention closer to the trade deadline, Provorov could still be moved. A scenario where he’s dealt as a rental and returns to Columbus in free agency remains a possibility.
