Broberg Called Up by Oilers, Darnell Nurse Out a Few Weeks with Injury

With news that defenseman Darnell Nurse is out with an injury, it appears prospect Philip Broberg is going to get his first action of the season as a member of the Edmonton Oilers roster. Jason Gregor reports: “Confirmed…Philip Broberg is coming to Edmonton.” Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic has also confirmed the reports.

Also according to Gregor, when it comes to Nurse, “Two sources have confirmed that Nurse will be out for a few weeks. It sounds like he will miss at least the remaining four games in November.”

Koekkoek left partway through Thursday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets and is now out with an injury. Broberg has been playing well in Bakersfield with 10 assists in 13 games. It’s a great opportunity for Broberg to show what he can do at the NHL level. Until now, he’s been dealing with injury issues that have slowed his progression to the pros and a pandemic didn’t help matters last season. He needs to get some experience and the Oilers have incredibly high hopes for him as a prospect.

The left-side of the Oilers blue line is an area that is considered a weakness on the team. If Broberg can come in a solidify that bottom pair, that would be a massive win for the player and the team as it could mean one less need heading into the trade deadline and as the Oilers try to fill in holes before the 2022 NHL postseason.

Head coach of the Bakersfield Condors, Jay Woodcroft recently commented on how Broberg has been doing and said:

“I’m very excited about Philip Broberg and his potential effect on the Edmonton Oilers one day. For me, he is in a great spot, because he’s adjusting to the North American brand of hockey. He’s playing important minutes. He has been someone who’s impressed at the offensive blue line. He’s got great legs.

He added that Broberg may make a few mistakes and the Oilers (and their fans) will have to understand that. Fortunately, he’s been limiting those mistakes and the hope is that he’s worked many of them out of his game by the time he gets to Edmonton. “I think he’s building confidence every day. I believe he’s growing before our eyes,” said Woodcroft.

Fans are excited to see the player at the NHL level and Broberg is likely excited to get a shot. It’s not clear where he’ll slot in on Saturday because of the Oilers’ injury situation. Edmonton can still use a player like Kris Russell, but they don’t really have someone to take Nurse’s minutes on that left side in the top pair.
