Penguins Re-Sign Kasperi Kapanen to 2-Year Contract Extension

Forward Kasperi Kapanen has signed a two-year extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to multiple reports, the Pittsburgh Penguins have re-signed winger Kasperi Kapanen to avoid his arbitration hearing that was set for July 30th. The new deal is for two years and carries a $3.2 million cap hit. He’ll be a UFA at end of the deal. He posted 11 goals and 32 points in 79 games played last season.

Kapanen is a speedy middle-six scoring winger who has spent time with the Penguins and Toronto Maple Leafs. He loves to carry the puck into the offensive zone and attack off the rush. He is a bit limited in terms of other skill sets and when he’s not on a scoring streak, he isn’t terribly effective. That he got such a nice deal from the Penguins after a poor season has surprised some.

Cap Friendly now has the Penguins at minus-$1.3M in cap space after Kapanen signing, so they’ll have some maneuvering to do before the start of the season.
