Penguins and Crosby on the Verge of Big Contract News?
Is Sidney Crosby on the verge of signing a contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins? What will that deal look like?
Getting ready to play in the final season of his current contract, Sidney Crosby is getting ready to talk about an extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Josh Yohe of The Athletic reports that it won’t be long until that extension gets done.
He writes:
“When I recently spoke with Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, he said he hadn’t discussed the contract with Crosby yet, indicating he was letting his most famous client enjoy his summer before getting back to business. Brisson said there’s an understanding that they’ll discuss the contract before summer is over. The Penguins’ first preseason game is Sept. 21.”
He also reports that Crosby isn’t even contemplating retirement. He’ll be signing another deal, it’s just a matter of how long he gets extended for.

The contract number is likely pretty obvious. Crosby has been signing deals at $8.7 million (his jersey number) for years (since 2008). He’ll likely sign for that same amount again. If it’s not that, it would be something like $9.87 million or $10.87 million. The question is whether it will be one season or two. “If it makes sense to sign for a couple of years, then we’ll do that,” Crosby said.
The season for the Penguins opens on Sept. 30 against the Philadelphia Flyers. Yohe reports that “There’s a real chance Crosby will have a new deal before that day.”
