Patrik Laine Signs 4-Year Extension With Columbus Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Patrik Laine to a four-year contract extension.

Patrik Laine and the Columbus Blue Jackets have agreed to terms on a multi-year contract. His new deal is for four years at $8.7 million per season. The deal buys one year of his RFA status and three years of Laine as a UFA. The $34.8 million contract extension will run through the 2025-26 NHL season and comes just days after the team inked forward Johnny Gaudreau in free agency.

The Laine breakdown:

  • 2022-23: $7.5M
  • 2023-24: $9.1M
  • 2024-25: $9.1M
  • 2025-26: $9.1M

“One of our priorities this summer was signing Patrik Laine to a contract extension,” said GM Jarmo Kekalainen. He adds, “He is a special player, one of the truly elite goal scorers in the National Hockey League, and he has fit in extremely well with our group since his arrival. He is an integral part of the team we are building in Columbus, and we couldn’t be happier that he will continue to be a Blue Jacket for the foreseeable future.”

Laine finished at a point-per-game pace for the first time in his career in 2021-22. He posted 26 goals and 30 assists for 56 points. He averaged 18:50 of ice time in 56 games with the Blue Jackets and will be a key part of their success moving forward. The hope is that he finds chemistry with Gaudreau and they get a center that makes their line one of the most dominant in the NHL.

The Blue Jackets are currently over the salary cap ceiling and will have to make a move to shed some salary.
