Panthers and Blackhawks Working on Trade Involving Brett Connolly

The Florida Panthers and Chicago Blackhawks have a pending deal in place for a trade that would involve Brett Connolly and Riley Stillman.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun: “Hearing Florida/Chicago have a tentative trade in place. Hawks would be getting Brett Connolly and Riley Stillman as part of the package. More parts to the deal.” Early reports suggest this is one of the ‘bad contract’ trades the Hawks have been rumored as willing to make to acquire assets.

LeBrun is reporting that the trade is now complete and it’s Connolly, Stillman and Henrik Borgstrom plus a 7th Rd pick in exchange for Lucas Carlsson and Lucas Wallmark. He adds, “Connolly has 2 more yrs at $3.5M AAV. Florida freeing up cap space as part of this. Hawks using their cap space to net 2 young players.”

Connolly has two years left with a $3.5M cap hit. The move could open up the door a little for the Panthers to make another trade. They’ve already got cap space thanks to an Aaron Ekblad injury and some are projecting GM Bill Bill Zito will try and make a big splash.

Meanwhile, Stillman is a 23-yo defenseman who has been on the NHL/AHL borderline. Ben Pope pointed out that at least one contract player would have to go CHI->FLA here too because the Hawks are at 49 of 50 contracts currently. I turned out that the trade was much bigger than that. A number of Blackhawks fans are excited about the prospec tof landing Borgstrom in the deal. Presumably, he is the sweetener Chicago was getting to take on the additional salary. He’s a big, talented center, who showed some NHL promise a couple years ago.

There is no retained salary on either side of this deal.

Connolly has four points in 21 games this season while Stillman has played in 8 games this season the Blackhawks blue line and registered no points. Stillman was drafted in Round 4 at #114 overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.
