Oilers & Puljujarvi Appear to Be Heading Separate Ways

The Edmonton Oilers and Jesse Puljuarvi are more likely ready to move on from one another, as per a report from TSN’s Tom Gazzola.

Heading into the 2022 offseason, there were plenty of rumors suggesting the Edmonton Oilers would look to move Jesse Puljujarvi, who is currently a restricted free agent.

While very much rumors at the time, they appear to be much more substantiated now after comments made by Tom Gazzola on The Oil Stream Podcast. Gazzola not only said he has heard that the Oilers will move on from Puljujarvi this offseason, but also suggested that the 24-year-old himself would welcome the change.

“I would be very surprised if he ends up in an Oilers uniform next year,” Gazzola said. “The topic of a fresh start is coming up again (with Puljujarvi). And it’s not the Oilers just saying, ‘We’re done with Jesse Puljujarvi.’ I think there’s kind of a mutual understanding there that both sides are OK with moving on…It’s not, ‘Hey, they need him to play with skilled players.’ It just feels like it’s time to move on and everybody kind of agrees.”

If, or perhaps when, Puljujarvi is traded, it will cause a massive divide amongst Oilers fans. There are those who tend to use the eye test that believe he simply lacks finishing skills and doesn’t provide enough in other facets to be a valuable player. On the other side, there is the analytically minded who are quick to point out his strong defensive play paired with his strong offensive possession numbers as well as the chances he generates.

Regardless of one’s opinion, it appears Holland is ready to move on from the 2016 fourth overall pick. It will be interesting to see what his market value is, as he has shown glimpses of his potential over the past two seasons, scoring 29 goals and 61 points in a combined 120 games. Who knows, perhaps with a change of scenery those numbers can continue to improve in the years to come.
