Oilers Could Target a “Legit” Top-Six Forward This Offseason
The Oilers may be preparing for a major offseason trade after Bob Stauffer hinted Edmonton could target a distressed top-six forward asset.
The offseason speculation surrounding the Edmonton Oilers is only beginning, but one tweet from Bob Stauffer has already sparked major discussion around what Edmonton’s summer priorities could look like.
On May 27, Stauffer posted that the Oilers “need to target a legit top-6 FWD via trade” and hinted that the organization could look to capitalize on a “distressed asset on another team.” For Oilers fans, that wording is significant. Stauffer is widely viewed as one of the closest media personalities to the organization, and while he does not directly speak for management, his comments often carry weight.
What makes the timing even more interesting is how quiet Edmonton has been recently, following the Bruce Cassidy situation and the reports linking the Oilers to coaching changes. Since those leaks surfaced, the organization has largely stayed silent publicly, making Stauffer’s comments stand out even more.
Jordan Kyrou Would Be the Dream Fit
Out of all the names potentially available this offseason, Jordan Kyrou may be the most impactful option for Edmonton.
The St. Louis Blues winger brings elite speed, transition play, and consistent top-six production. He has already proven he can score at a high level while playing heavy offensive minutes. On a line with Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, Kyrou could elevate Edmonton’s attack to another level.

The challenge, however, is the cost. A realistic trade package likely starts with Darnell Nurse, Matt Savoie, and a first-round pick. From Edmonton’s perspective, moving Nurse’s contract could create flexibility while also bringing in a legitimate offensive weapon.
But there are major hurdles. Nurse owns a full no-movement clause, meaning he completely controls the situation. It is difficult to envision him waiving for St. Louis unless the Blues immediately flipped him elsewhere for futures or draft capital. Even then, the financial logistics would be complicated.
Other Names to Watch
Kyrou is not the only intriguing possibility.
Jake DeBrusk could make sense because of his Edmonton roots and ability to play in a fast-paced offensive system. While he may not have the same ceiling as Kyrou, he would bring versatility and proven scoring depth.
Kent Johnson and Mason McTavish are more ambitious targets. Both are young, skilled centers with top-line upside. It would likely take a decent package to pry either player away from their organizations, especially McTavish.
Meanwhile, Alexis Lafrenière could emerge as a buy-low candidate if the New York Rangers decide to shake up their core. Edmonton may believe a change of scenery alongside elite talent could unlock another level offensively.
Shane Wright is another fascinating possibility. The Seattle Kraken center still carries enormous upside, though Seattle would likely demand a premium return.
Then there is Jason Robertson. If the Dallas Stars truly explore major roster changes, Robertson would immediately become one of the biggest names on the trade market. Edmonton would almost certainly have interest, but fitting his value and cap hit into a realistic trade would be extremely difficult.
Oilers Searching for Another Offensive Layer
After another disappointing playoff exit, it is becoming increasingly clear the Oilers may be looking for another dynamic offensive piece to support McDavid and Draisaitl.
Whether that means targeting a distressed asset, swinging big on a blockbuster, or finding a younger player ready for a breakout, Edmonton appears poised to aggressively explore the market.
And when Stauffer starts hinting at that possibility publicly, it is usually worth paying attention to.
