Oilers Josh Brown Call-Up Raises Questions About Possible Injury

Defenseman Josh Brown has been recalled by the Edmonton Oilers, leading to questions about the health of the blue line.

The Edmonton Oilers have recalled defenseman Josh Brown from the Bakersfield Condors. The decision is an odd one, considering the Oilers have plenty of defensive options available, and Brown hasn’t done much to warrant a promotion. This has led to speculation from fans that someone in the Oilers’ top six might be injured.

Jason Gregor responded to a fan who suggested the move made no sense. Gregor wrote, “Actually, it does. They are only carrying six DS, going on a four-game roadie out east after tonight, and might have a Dman banged up or sick.”

There was no indication that a defenseman suffered an injury during Friday’s win over the Anaheim Ducks. The Oilers also haven’t released any kind of statement noting that a player will not be available for Saturday’s game versus the Seattle Kraken.

Brown Could Help Oilers With Hectic Schedule

Brown, who previously played for the Panthers, Senators, Bruins, and Coyotes, brings experience but has primarily been in the AHL this season. He’s a tough guy and is willing to play physically, which the Oilers arguably need a bit more of, but he doesn’t offer much else at the NHL level. Brown’s physical presence might also address weaknesses as the team is about to play seven games in the next 11 days.

Is this move a temporary fix, or does it hint at other concerns?

As the Oilers take on the Seattle Kraken tonight, it will be revealed if there are other roster issues that explain the Brown call-up. If everyone is available to play, this might just be a move to add depth. If so, there will be questions about why someone else from the AHL wasn’t given a look. Brown has only three assists in 20 games for the Condors this season.
