Oilers Bring in Devin Shore and Ryan Stanton on PTOs

There was talk that the Edmonton Oilers might bring in a couple of veterans on PTOs and on Tuesday, the team confirmed that news as they announced they are signing both Devin Shore and Ryan Stanton to professional tryouts. Stanton has signed an AHL contract with the Bakersfield Condors, for the 2020-21 season, should he not make the Oilers out of camp.

On the Oilers official website, they discuss both players in a bit of detail. Shore, 26, spent parts of last season with the Anaheim Ducks before a trade deadline deal sent him to the Columbus Blue Jackets. He ended up playing 45 games and recording 12 points. Shore has played nearly 300 NHL games, and has been an effective point producer in the past, most notably during the 2016-17 season he spent with the Dallas Stars when he scored 13 goals and 33 points.

In Stanton, the Oilers are adding a player with a lot less experience but has been a pro for some time. General manager Ken Holland has an affinity for “pros” who force others on the team to compete for jobs and that’s the attribute Stanton should bring.

A 31-year-old defenseman, he went undrafted but has played 120 games at the NHL level, mostly with the Vancouver Canucks. He spent the 2019-20 season with the Ontario Reign of the AHL, scoring five points in 36 games.

Will Either Make the Oilers Roster?

Stanton has been with the Oilers before, so they know him a bit. He spent two seasons with the Bakersfield Condors and there’s a good chance he winds up there again in 2020-21.

Shore, on the other hand, has the potential to make the team, but will be in tough to be a regular considering the depth the Oilers currently have at his position. A taxi squad spot seems more likely, where he’ll be called upon in the event of an injury or illness.
