Oilers Could Right a Wrong and Unlock Second Power Play Unit with Unsigned UFA
Is there a chance that the Edmonton Oilers could bring in a power play sniper under Mike Babcock that every least expects?
With head coach Mike Babcock coming in and the mandate being that the Edmonton Oilers will spread out their offence, that could mean finding the right mix on a second-unit power play. Instead of relying on Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard to play almost every minute of every man-advantage, having another group of five offensively gifted players could be a bonus.
Interestingly, there’s still a player out there on the market who would be inexpensive, a great fit in that regard, and is looking for a chance to prove himself.
Patrik Laine seems like an immediate no-go with Babcock in the mix. The history between these two is well documented, and things didn’t work out in Columbus. Then again, their time spent together was limited. Babcock never even coached a single game before he was removed by the Blue Jackets. Laine eventually moved on to the Montreal Canadiens.
During the summer and early training camp, when Babcock was removed, Laine actually spoke positively about the Oilers’ new coach. He respected the fact that he was “hard but honest.” However, Laine was reported to be directly connected to the league’s review of this incident and Babcock’s exit.

The details of that investigation were never released. It was only said that what was found didn’t paint the best picture of Babcock, but it wasn’t enough to warrant keeping him out of the NHL. Meanwhile, Laine hasn’t spoken about the investigation or his relationship to Babcock since news surfaced that the coach was looking to return.
Could Laine and Babcock Get a Do-Over With Oilers?
Could this be the ultimate change for a mulligan? Perhaps not, but if what took place wasn’t egregious, maybe both would like a chance to put everything behind them. Babcock making it work with Laine would show a lot about how he’s changed. Laine joining a team coached by Babcock suggests there’s less of an issue here than originally alleged.
At the same time, the Oilers would be adding a sniper who could be the trigger man on their second power-play unit. He’d come in on a team-friendly, bonus-focused contract and give the Oilers another offensive weapon. How much he can offer 5-vs-5 is another story. It might not be much. As such, he’d have to be comfortable in a specific, and limited role.
It’s a long shot. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, particularly if Laine goes most of the summer without a deal and is looking at a PTO as his only chance of landing a contract.
