Oilers and Flames Pursuing Similar Top-Six Trade Targets

Are the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames going after the same targets at this year’s deadline?

On the most recent edition of TSN’s Insider Trading. Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger report that the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are in the market for essentially the same thing. Both teams need a forward, likely that will fit in the top six and the Flames are specifically looking for a right-handed shot.

LeBrun said, “It makes me think, there’s certainly some interest in Tyler Toffolli from the LA Kings, among other targets.”

Understandably, the Flames could use another right-handed shot in the lineup with really only Elias Lindholm and depth center Derek Ryan on the current roster. The Flames have money to spend now that they’ve moved Michael Frolik in a cap-clearing trade.

Dreger said, “The Edmonton Oilers are also looking for a top-six forward.” He added that he believes one team the Oilers are watching are the Toronto Maple Leafs where there are rumblings around the “likes of Kapanen, Johnsson, maybe Alex Kerfoot.”

Competition Between the Flames and Oilers is Everywhere

The Oilers and Flames have made headlines this week due to on-ice dust-ups but the competition appears to be getting fierce off the ice as well. Both teams are close to that playoff bubble, both need one or two similar pieces to get them as deep as they’d like to be and now, both may be competing for the same players.

As teams in the Pacific do what they need to do, it’s no longer about simply improving your team. There’s something to be said for not letting your division rivals improve theirs either. You can bet both teams will be calling the same GM’s about similar players. The question will be who has the most to give back in return and/or what price are they willing to meet to acquire what they need?
