Offically Eliminated from Playoff Contention: What’s Next for the Canucks?

With the Vancouver Canucks officially eliminated from playoff contention, what’s next for the roster, the coach, and management?

The Vancouver Canucks, now officially eliminated from playoff contention, enter the offseason facing major questions. There is uncertainty surrounding both the roster and leadership group and moves are expected over the summer as part of a rebuild that is only just beginning.

The discussion starts, but certainly doesn’t end with Elias Pettersson. His future in Vancouver is increasingly unclear. As noted by Patrick Johnston of The Province, both the team and the player may benefit from a fresh start. He writes, “The Canucks would be smart to try to trade him in the summer. See if you can get anything of value in return. Really, the player himself would be smart to ask for a trade. It’s clear he thinks he needs a fresh start.”

Speculation will also surround Brock Boeser. He seems keen on staying, but some believe the organization could consider moving him to speed up their rebuild.

The Canucks need to figure out which young players they’re building around. Zeev Buium feels like a key piece of their future, but what about Tom Willander and Elias Pettersson Jr.? Their progression—or lack thereof—adds another layer of uncertainty. Johnston writes, “Is Tom Willander anything at all? He can move the puck a little but he also is slow on his decisions at times. He can defend the rush a little but he often gets overwhelmed defending out of the corner. At this point, he doesn’t look like he’s going to be anything more than a third-pairing defenceman.”

Coaching and Management

Off the ice, there are questions about coaching and management. General manager Patrik Allvin may or may not stay on the as guy who answers questions, but most people know he’s not in charge. Head coach Adam Foote may or may not get another season behind the bench.

Thomas Drance of The Athletic writes that there is literally nothing that could happen this season now that will change the fate of those who may not survive the purge. “Nothing will change the evaluation of Canucks management, or Adam Foote’s suitability to get a second year as Vancouver’s head coach.”

With pending free agents and multiple high draft selections (10 picks in the first six rounds of the 2026 draft), the Canucks are positioned for a potentially transformative summer. They could flip some of those picks for NHL-ready players or make their selections with their own pick and the one acquired in the Quinn Hughes trade.
