Oilers and Canucks Make a Minor Post-Deadline Trade

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired forward Josh Bloom from the Canucks in exchange for forward Jayden Grubbe.

According to a statement from the Edmonton Oilers, the team has made a minor trade with the Vancouver Canucks following the trade deadline. Edmonton acquires forward Josh Bloom from the Canucks in exchange for forward Jayden Gurbbe.

Even though the deadline has passed, teams can still make player-for-player or asset-for-asset swaps. That said, there are significant restrictions. Teams can acquire players, prospects, draft picks, or even rights to unsigned players via trades year-round. However, any player traded after the deadline cannot play in any regular-season games or Stanley Cup Playoff games for their new team that same season.

The Oilers write, “Bloom is a 22-year-old left-winger from Oakville, Ont., who was selected 95th overall by the Canucks in the 2021 NHL Draft. He has played 19 games with both the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks and ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings this season, scoring one goal with Abbotsford plus 15 goals and 13 assists with Kalamazoo.” They add, “He won the 2024 Memorial Cup with the host Saginaw Spirit and also played for the North Bay Battalion during his Ontario Hockey League career.”

Grubbe, 23, is a 6’3″, 201-pound right-shot forward. He was drafted 65th overall by the New York Rangers in 2021, his rights were traded to Edmonton in May 2023, and he signed a three-year entry-level contract through 2025-26. A versatile center/wing, Grubbe is valued for his work ethic, two-way responsibility, grit, and physical play. After college hockey at the University of Denver, he’s split time between the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors and ECHL teams. He projects as a bottom-six depth forward capable of penalty killing and energizing the lineup.
