Breakthrough on the Contract Front Between Edvinsson and the Red Wings?

Simon Edvinsson is heading back to North America; has something changed on his contract status with the Detroit Red Wings?

Chris Johnston said on TSN Insider Trading Tuesday that things have changed a bit over the past 24 hours with defenseman Simon Edvinsson. The Detroit Red Wings still haven’t signed him to an extension, but there was movement this week, even if it’s not the kind of movement that suggests a contract extension or a trade is imminent.

A photo of Edvinsson surfaced showing him with his bags packed and a caption that read, “best of luck.” That was from his mother as it looked like he was hopping on a plane. This wasn’t necessarily a sign that Edvinsson was heading back to Detroit to hammer out a deal. Instead, he’s focused on his training and conditioning.

Johnston said Edvinsson has left Sweden and is heading back to North America. “He wants to work for a trainer back in North America that he feels comfortable with, but it obviously gets him closer to the NHL, both in proximity and, he hopes, in terms of his game shape. Not necessarily a sign that there’s been a breakthrough on the contract front, but the fact that he is coming back does symbolize some good things.”

Is Time Running Out for Edvinsson and the Red Wings?

Edvinsson has to sign a deal with an NHL team before December 1, 2026, if he wants to play this season.

The Red Wings have maintained that they want to sign Edvinsson to a new contract, and they aren’t entertaining the idea of a trade, even though it’s being reported that several teams have called interim GM Shawn Horcoff and asked about where the situation is at and what Detroit is looking for in return on a trade. The return is said to be sizeable, with some teams wondering if the Red Wings are being unreasonable and others saying they can’t get much of a straight answer out of the Red Wings organization.
