Nick Leddy Traded to St. Louis Blues by Red Wings

Nick Leddy has been traded by the Detroit Red Wings to the St. Louis Blues ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline.

Defenseman Nick Leddy has been traded by the Detroit Red Wings. He’ll be headed to the St. Louis Blues along with Luke Witkowski for Jake Walman, Oskar Sundqvist and a 2023 2nd round pick. It was reported Leddy and Red Wings kicked around a three-year contract extension which the team was open to. In the end, a deal didn’t get done and Leddy moves ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline.

Coming off a seven-year deal at $5.5 million per season, Leddy has never been a UFA. He is a pending UFA this summer at the age of 31. It is likely he will looking for one last long-term deal in free agency. Leddy moves on with young defensemen Moritz Seider and Filip Hronek taking big steps in their development. Leddy was there to mentor them, and he did his job well.

Leddy offers a ton of playoff experience (121 games played), and won a Stanley Cup with Chicago in 2013. This season he has 16 points in 55 games. Unfortunately, he is a plus/ minus-33. Much of that is a result of him playing for the Red Wings. With the Blues, he’ll be asked to do what he’s good at which is carry the puck out of trouble, make a good first pass and help his teammates create offense.

He will likely slot in alongside Colton Parayko on the Blues’ second pair.
