NHL Weekend Rumors: Trade Buzz, Goalie Market Chaos, and Coaching Dominoes

Explore the latest NHL weekend rumors featuring trade talks and coaching changes that could reshape several NHL rosters.

In this weekend’s NHL Trade Talk rumors report, the league’s trade and coaching markets are already heating up well ahead of the offseason rush. The Edmonton Oilers, who are among the teams looking for a coach, are also evaluating goaltending options. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are interviewing potential coaches, starting conversations with Auston Matthews, and are being linked to major trade chips. The Anaheim Ducks are drawing attention for a potential blockbuster involving one of their young forwards, and the goalie market is beginning to take shape in unexpected ways.

Ducks Open Door on McTavish Conversations

One of the most intriguing names surfacing in trade chatter is Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish. According to Pierre LeBrun, the Ducks are “listening” on the 23-year-old center as they balance rising salary commitments for their young core.

McTavish, a former No. 3 overall pick, remains a valuable middle-six pivot with upside, but Anaheim may be forced to consider offers with Leo Carlsson and Cutter Gauthier due for significant raises. That financial squeeze could push him into play.

Teams such as the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens have been loosely connected due to their need for a top-six center, though the asking price is expected to be high. McTavish carries a long-term deal at $7 million per season through 2030–31 and no trade protection, giving Anaheim flexibility if they choose to make a move.

Maple Leafs Face Goalie Dilemma and Trade Speculation

In Toronto, the Maple Leafs are dealing with a different kind of roster pressure. Elliotte Friedman noted that the team has a surplus of goaltenders and must decide whether Dennis Hildeby will be the NHL backup next season or risk being lost on waivers. That internal logjam comes as Toronto continues to be mentioned in broader trade conversations, particularly involving defensemen like Morgan Rielly and other potential cap-driven moves.

At the same time, the Leafs are still searching for a coach and starting conversations with Auston Matthews about his commitment to the team. Management has to balance getting better and Matthews’ win-now expectations. While no major shakeups are imminent, Toronto’s front office is clearly evaluating things.

Goalie Market Starting to Move

The NHL goaltending market is beginning to take shape, with Chris Johnston noting that Vegas Golden Knights netminder Adin Hill could be a trade candidate. Nick Kypreos mentioned that the Edmonton Oilers continue to look into Jordan Binnington. Sam Montembeault might be the odd man out in Montreal.

Elsewhere, Philadelphia is reportedly exploring extensions for pending UFA Dan Vladar, with discussions centered around a five-year deal in the $5.75–$6 million range.

The coaching market is also beginning to stir. Frank Seravalli reported that Jay Woodcroft is considered a leading candidate in Los Angeles and Toronto, but Elliotte Friedman shut down speculation that Toronto has even requested permission to speak with him.

In Colorado, Darren Dreger pushed back on speculation that Jared Bednar could be on the way out, suggesting there is no clear indication of a coaching change yet. Still, fans and analysts are wondering about a change there, especially with University of Denver head coach David Carle being on the radar for a few teams.

What will the Oilers do? Vegas GM Kelly McCrimmon called out Edmonton for leaking the interview request news, but the team hasn’t commented on the accuracy of McCrimmon’s statement.

Dallas remains confident it can sign Jason Robertson to a new contract, while New Jersey’s long-term planning could intersect with its trade assets if it pursues major upgrades. Several teams were rumored to be open to moving a top pick at the draft this season, including Toronto and the No 1. pick.
