NHL Trade Talk Recap: Wild, Jets & Maple Leafs Fantasy Trade

Quinn Hughes sends a chilling message, Hellebuyck’s trade market shrinks, and the annual McDavid-to-Toronto fantasy returns.

There were two real situations and one total fantasy in today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (September 9, 2026). Quinn Hughes just left Minnesota hanging with a pretty ominous quote. Winnipeg’s Hellebuyck trade market is shrinking by the week. And somebody’s once again trying to talk themselves into McDavid landing in Toronto.

Quinn Hughes Says He’ll Sign “Whenever I Feel Like It” — And That’s Not What Minnesota Wanted to Hear

Quinn Hughes still doesn’t have a new deal in Minnesota. And his latest comments didn’t calm anyone down. At the Player Media Tour, he made it pretty clear he’s not feeling any pressure to get something done before camp. He said it’ll happen whenever he feels it needs to. That’s a rough thing for the Wild to hear given the swirling speculation that he’d love to eventually play alongside his brothers in New Jersey, and it leaves Minnesota facing a brutal choice. Should they trade him now for a big return, or risk losing him for nothing later?

The Devils might have the easier hand here. If Hughes really wants to join his brothers, New Jersey could just sit back and wait for free agency instead of giving up assets in a trade. The only risk for them is timing. Since there’s chatter Hughes could sign something shorter-term to line up with Jack Hughes’ deal. That means New Jersey might regret not moving sooner. Either way, Guerin’s stuck in a genuinely tough spot. Right now, it sure sounds like Hughes has all the leverage.

Why the Hellebuyck Trade Just Got Way More Complicated

Elliotte Friedman says the Hellebuyck situation is trickier now than it was earlier this summer. That’s because the pieces that made a deal possible back then just aren’t there anymore. Florida was seriously in on him but blew their trade capital on the Brady Tkachuk blockbuster and the Markstrom pickup instead. Buffalo’s offer reportedly hinged on the 4th overall pick, which is now off the table since the draft already happened without a trade. On top of that, some players’ no-trade protections changed on July 1, meaning guys who might’ve been part of a package could now simply refuse to go to Winnipeg.

In the Jets room, teammates are trying to stay professional. Adam Lowry insists it won’t be a distraction. Dylan DeMelo admitted it’s a genuinely tough situation given how close he and Hellebuyck actually are outside of hockey. As for who’s still realistically in the mix, Pierre LeBrun points to Carolina, Buffalo, and Utah as the current possibilities. Bottom line, Hellebuyck clearly wants this resolved before camp. However, with the original market having mostly evaporated, Winnipeg’s options look a lot thinner than they did just a few months ago.

The Annual “McDavid to Toronto” Fantasy Is Back — And This Time It’s Getting a Full Trade Breakdown

Every single offseason, someone floats the idea of McDavid landing in Toronto. And every single time, it goes nowhere. This year’s version came from insider Michael Augello, who cited vague press-box chatter rather than actual reporting. That’s a pretty thin foundation for a rumour that gets this much traction every year. Still, since it’s out there, someone decided to actually build the trade anyway. And the price tag is exactly as wild as you’d expect.

The proposed package has Toronto sending Nylander, Knies, McKenna, Cowan, Danford, and three high picks to Edmonton for McDavid, plus Kapanen and Frederic coming back the other way. It’s the kind of deal that gives Toronto a terrifying Matthews-McDavid duo, but strips nearly every young asset the franchise has. The catch, as always, is that Edmonton has zero real reason to move McDavid. He’s locked in at a bargain $12.5 million for two more years, and there’s still no actual evidence he wants out. So it’s a fun thought exercise, but McDavid’s about as likely to end up in Toronto this year as he was any other year, which is to say, not very.
