Rogers and Sportsnet Confirm the Return Of Two Big Names
Both Elliotte Friedman and Kevin Bieksa will return to Rogers and Sportsnet this season, the network announced in a statement on Wednesday.
Rogers and Sportsnet have confirmed that both Elliotte Friedman and Kevin Bieksa will return to their positions with the network. After a week of uncertainty and speculation that both might make a move after their contracts expired and negotiations weren’t exactly going smoothly, both have come to terms on new deals.
Rogers announced in a PR release on Wednesday that both will be back, and they revealed their full staff lineup and the schedule for all of the upcoming games.
They wrote:
“The puck drops on this season’s Saturday Night Hockey coverage featuring Ron MacLean, Kevin Bieksa, Elliotte Friedman and Colby Armstrong on Oct. 3 with a whopping four games, starting with Ottawa visiting Toronto, Montreal facing Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers hosting the Seattle Kraken, and concluding with the Calgary Flames taking on the rival Vancouver Canucks in the nightcap.”
Friedman reportedly drew interest from Amazon Prime, which wanted him for its Wednesday night NHL package. However, Friedman ultimately didn’t make the move. Amazon’s growing role in Canadian hockey broadcasting should be taken seriously, and their play to be a contender on Wednesday nights is real. That said, they might not have been prepared to offer the kind of money it would take to pry Friedman loose.
