Today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for September 30, 2026, shows opening-night chaos is officially here. There’s a lot to unpack. Detroit’s dealing with a contract standoff that just won’t quit. Toronto’s newest rookie had his big moment hijacked by a goalie’s pregame ritual. And Edmonton’s coach wasn’t shy about calling out his own team after a wild overtime loss.

Detroit Can’t Get Edvinsson Signed — And Fans Are Done Waiting

With the season starting in just two days, the Red Wings still haven’t locked up restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson. He’s now been spotted training back in Sweden with his old club while negotiations drag on. GM Shawn Horcoff confirmed he’s not practicing with the team, though talks are reportedly happening daily. The frustrating part for fans is that Edvinsson’s done everything right. He didn’t sign elsewhere, showed up to camp, and has negotiated in good faith the whole time.

Rumoured numbers put his ask somewhere around $9-10 million. That honestly isn’t out of line by today’s standards, making the holdup even more confusing to fans. This is just the latest headache in what’s becoming a genuinely messy summer for Detroit, with Edvinsson now joining Dylan Larkin and Alex DeBrincat in the unresolved-situations pile right as the season’s about to begin.

McKenna’s Big Debut Got Overshadowed By… Bobrovsky’s Pregame Routine?

Gavin McKenna’s NHL debut should’ve been all about him, complete with the traditional rookie lap, but instead the internet latched onto something else entirely. Sergei Bobrovsky stepped onto the ice first for his usual pregame superstition. Some fans and media pounced, with one Montreal columnist jokingly suggesting it said something about Toronto’s team culture, though most people quickly pointed out it was just a goalie being a goalie, not some kind of disrespect, especially since it sounds like the whole thing was actually discussed beforehand.

On the ice, McKenna’s night was honestly pretty rough: no points, just one shot, a minus-2, and a couple of giveaways, with the advanced stats backing up that it wasn’t his best showing. But he stayed upbeat afterward, admitting the mistakes and saying he’s glad Toronto plays again right away so he can bounce back. Debut jitters happen to everyone, and for a player with his talent, this is just the first of many nights to come.

Babcock’s Blunt After Opening Night: “That Was Ridiculous”

Despite Evan Bouchard putting on a historic show, Babcock didn’t sugarcoat Edmonton’s opening-night performance. He called the defensive effort “ridiculous” after Vancouver built a big second-period lead, and made it clear he knew exactly what he was getting into with this team, flat-out saying he never expected changing the structure to be easy. His message was simple: the standard has to be higher, and they’ll be addressing it right away.

The bright spot was Bouchard, who had an absolutely wild night: five points and a hat trick in the overtime loss, the first defenceman hat trick on opening night since 1980 and the first five-point opener by a blueliner in NHL history. Even that wasn’t enough to make Babcock feel good about it, though, pointing out Edmonton still gave up three chances in the final minute and a half of overtime. Great individual night, rough team, and Babcock clearly wasn’t interested in celebrating a loss, no matter how exciting it was to watch.
