Days Before Season Starts, Red Wings’ Edvinsson Standoff Takes a Turn

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson is back in Sweden skating, which is another bad look for the organization.

With just two days until puck drop in Detroit, the Red Wings still haven’t signed restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson, and he was spotted Wednesday training with his former club, Frölunda, back in Sweden. Obviously, what felt like a slam-dunk contract extension has turned into anything but, and this newest development has Red Wings fans furious.

According to reports, Edvinsson and his agent decided that Sweden was the best place for him to stay in shape while negotiations continue. Talks between the team and his representatives are said to be happening daily as both sides try to break the stalemate. GM Shawn Horcoff addressed the situation in a statement: “As of today, Simon is not practicing with the team. The organization will continue conversations with Simon and his representatives.”

Red Wings Fans Are Frustrated

Fans weren’t shy about their frustration. Many pointed out that Edvinsson did everything right. He reportedly didn’t sign an offer sheet elsewhere, showed up to camp without a contract and negotiated in good faith. He’s being called a good soldier and a player who genuinely wants to be in Detroit. Meanwhile, the Red Wings organization is taking heat.

Some fans claim he’s asking for around $9-10 million, which in today’s changing NHL landscape isn’t a huge amount of money. That figure is unconfirmed, but even if it’s anywhere close, it’s hard to imagine why the Red Wings are being so hesitant. It’s been another poor decision in a summer of bad decisions for the organization.

The frustration goes beyond one player. Fans are asking how the front office can go so many days without resolving the key issues of Dylan Larkin, Edvinsson and Alex DeBrincat.

With opening night looming, the pressure on Detroit is growing. Whether a deal arrives before the puck drops remains to be seen.
