NHL Trade Talk Recap: Oilers, Canucks & Maple Leafs Fans Go Slow

Edmonton rolls the dice on Devon Levi, Vancouver’s mayor sparks Canucks playoff controversy, and Toronto tempers McKenna expectations.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 11, 2026), three teams are basically dealing with “big expectations” in completely different ways right now. The Edmonton Oilers are still trying to finally find goalie stability with Devon Levi as the swing for the long term. The Vancouver Canucks’ mayor caught everyone off guard with that wild take about not wanting Canucks playoff stress. And the Toronto Maple Leafs are betting on Gavin McKenna to grow into a future star—just not so fast that fans should expect him to break records right away.

Oilers Keep Chasing “Almost” at Goalie—Now They Roll the Dice on Devon Levi

For years, Edmonton and reliable goaltending have been like frenemies. They’ll find someone who’s solid (sometimes even great) for a stretch. Then it doesn’t last, and Edmonton has a habit of moving on too fast. Talbot had monster seasons, Smith gave them elite goalie play for a while, and Skinner showed flashes when he was thrown into the starter role early. But it always felt like the net never stayed locked down long enough to actually build something stable.

Now the Oilers are hoping it finally clicks with Devon Levi. He’s the young goalie they grabbed from Buffalo along with a seventh-round pick for a third-round pick. The whole point is that Levi has the accolades and the athletic tools to be a real long-term starter. Frederik Andersen is there to mentor him, and Tristan Jarry is there to rebound in case things don’t fully go to plan right away.

Vancouver Mayor’s Weird Take on Canucks Playoff Stress

In Canada, spring hockey is basically a religion. Once playoffs roll around, the whole city gets excited. It’s not just fun, it’s a big money boost too. More playoff games mean more ticket sales, packed restaurants and bars, more tourism, and a whole downtown vibe that helps everyone from the team to local workers. So it was a bit shocking when Vancouver mayor Ken Sim said he doesn’t want the Canucks playing playoff games because the safety stress would cost the city millions.

That comment came with a lot of side-eye. Vancouver already has major-event credibility and even has a riot history from 2011. So people think the solution is better planning and not basically hoping the team doesn’t make the playoffs. The odd part is that Sim’s comments came well before anyone knew what the Canucks’ playoff chances would look like. But if they somehow surprise and make a run, Sim’s words won’t be forgotten.

Maple Leafs Hit on McKenna—But Don’t Expect Records This Year

Toronto landed Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick. Now the dream is that he turns into a real star and eventually becomes the perfect setup guy for Auston Matthews. His hands, hockey IQ, and confidence already look NHL-ready, and the Maple Leafs basically plan to ease him in. While he could be great, the step up in competition is huge, and he’s still learning how to dominate at the pro level.

The realistic path is McKenna starts on the second line with guys like John Tavares (and maybe Nylander), builds chemistry, then gets bumped up to play with Matthews if he’s handling it. So fans shouldn’t automatically expect point-per-game right away. A solid rookie season around the mid-40s in points is the likely “best bet.” Bigger numbers becoming possible later if things click and his development keeps rising.
