NHL Trade Talk Recap: Oilers, Blue Jackets & Canucks Won’t Blink

The Oilers hunt for another miracle trade, the Canucks eye Shane Wright, and Werenski’s situation proves every NHL word matters.

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (July 10, 2026), we share a quick rundown of three NHL stories making headlines. Three teams are basically stuck in trade-land right now, and the common thread is the same. Deals that sound simple on paper can get brutal fast once real “cost” shows up. The Oilers are wondering if they can pull off another miracle-type roster move. Canucks fans are watching Shane Wright trade talks. And the Kraken are reportedly demanding a king’s ransom. And meanwhile, the whole Werenski situation with the Blue Jackets shows how, even when nothing’s officially decided, player messaging can still send fanbases into a full spiral.

Do the Oilers Have a Second “Miracle” Trade In Them This Summer?

If the Oilers want to make more roster tweaks next year or squeeze out more cap space, the simplest route is a trade. But as we saw this summer, that’s usually way harder than it sounds. Edmonton already pulled off a small miracle by moving Darnell Nurse and getting the Sharks to take on all of his contract. Plus they got something back. The question is whether GM Stan Bowman can do that again.

The tough part is finding candidates who other teams will actually want to take on. Tristan Jarry is a big example. He’s hard to move because of his injuries and rough numbers, and his $5.375M cap hit over the next two years makes it even riskier for a team. Trent Frederic is another likely headache. He’s not producing much for a $3.85M cap hit. And he’s got seven years left on his deal, so most teams won’t want to gamble on him.

Fans Are Spiralling Over Zach Werenski’s Blue Jackets Situation

It’s not that top players using leverage is some weird new thing. It’s that the public story starts clashing with what the team has to plan for. And once a player talks about the future, fans treat it as a done deal.

The annoying part is how quickly “keeping options open” turns into “everything’s settled.” Even when nothing has actually been decided yet, fans often react as if the decision has already been made. Maybe the real lesson is just being a bit less certain until you’ve got a real answer.

Canucks Might Want Shane Wright… But Seattle’s Asking Way Too Much

Vancouver reportedly wants Shane Wright. And that actually fits their rebuild timeline. He’s a young center, and he’d make sense for their future down the middle.

But the reported price is steep. Seattle wants either Zeev Buium or Tom Willander in return. The Canucks probably don’t want to give up those two blue-line cornerstones. So if the ask drops later, that’s when Vancouver could circle back.
