NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Oilers, Canadiens & Islanders

Three NHL storylines: Did Berube hold back the Leafs, are McDavid-to-Montreal rumours nonsense, and is Barzal on the trade block?

This edition (June 2, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three stories from our posts today. Did Craig Berube’s system neuter the Maple Leafs’ firepower? How silly were the McDavid-to-Habs rumours that got debunked? And, are there trade whispers about Mathew Barzal? Here’s a quick wrap of the three stories you need to know.

Did Berube Turn the Maple Leafs Into a Worse Team?

Under Craig Berube, the Maple Leafs lost themselves. The coaching pushed hard toward being “tough to play against.” As a result, structure became everything, squeezing out creativity and rush plays. Shot metrics backed it up: too much time in their own zone, fewer controlled entries, and the offence rarely looked like it was operating at full power.

With stars like Matthews and Nylander, “pretty good” isn’t acceptable. You want max offensive danger. Instead, plays got safer, younger guys had a shorter leash, and the team felt muted more often than electric. So the real question isn’t just who’s on the roster. It’s whether Berube’s system kept this group from being its best.

McDavid-to-Montreal Rumours — Not Confirmed

The internet freaked out after a report saying McDavid was eyeballing Montreal over the weekend, but that whole house-hunting angle got shot down fast. His wife was in town for an event, but Connor wasn’t. The Oilers aren’t trading him, and he hasn’t asked for a move. So don’t start planning banners just yet if you are in Montreal.

That said, Lavoie points out the reality: if McDavid ever wants out, he’s gonna look at contenders. And Montreal could fit that bill someday. It’s a long shot for now (he can’t even explore free agency until 2028), so treat this as gossip, not a deadline-day plot.

Barzal Buzz: Islanders Testing the Waters

Seems like every superstar’s name is getting tossed around this summer. Now, Mathew Barzal has popped up as a surprise trade possibility. Would the Isles shop him to clear cap space despite him being their top offensive player? Bruce Garrioch says New York’s poking the market, but Barzal’s $9.15M AAV and 22-team no-trade list make any move tricky.

Barzal still produces, and the Islanders aren’t waving the white flag. They’ve added pieces and want to win now. So, unless someone offers an absolute killer package, he’s probably sticking around. But in a wild offseason, don’t be shocked if his name keeps coming up.
