McDavid Leaving Oilers?: Canadiens Reporter Squashes House-Hunting Rumor
Connor McDavid was reportedly in Montreal looking at houses, and that sparked rumors about a move to the Canadiens. Was it true?
Rumors surrounding Connor McDavid and a potential move to the Montreal Canadiens picked up steam this week after a report suggested the superstar could consider Montreal as a future destination. The speculation, sparked by claims he was visiting neighborhoods during the Formula 1 Grand Prix and would include the Canadiens on a short list of preferred teams, quickly gained traction online.
While the idea isn’t entirely far-fetched, given Edmonton’s struggles this season, McDavid’s stance that he’s giving the Oilers a window to compete, and Montreal’s trajectory and market appeal, the chatter may have gotten ahead of itself. The Oilers aren’t looking to trade him, McDavid hasn’t asked for a trade, and there’s nothing brewing between the Habs and Oilers.

In fact, a Canadiens reporter is stepping in to set the record straight and pour cold water on the fact that McDavid was even in Montreal as reported.
McDavid Was Not House Shopping in Montreal
Renaud Lavoie penned an article immediately shooting down the report about McDavid’s house-hunting in Montreal. “Connor McDavid was not at the Grand Prix in Montreal. He did not do any house shopping. His wife was there. She was here for an event to which she had been invited. Period,” Lavoie said.

Lavoie didn’t shoot down the idea that the Canadiens might eventually be an interesting option for McDavid if things go sideways in Edmonton. At the same time, he noted that an influential agent said there were several options McDavid might consider.
Lavoie wrote, “We can safely say the following: If Connor McDavid ever gets fed up, where will he go? To a team that has no chance of winning the Stanley Cup or to a team that has a very good chance of doing so?” That would put the Canadiens in the conversation. However, it does not mean there is anything imminent, and he certainly wasn’t house shopping with an intention to move to the area ahead of some kind of blockbuster trade.
And, if McDavid looks Montreal’s way as a free agent, he can’t do so until 2028. Lavoie admitted of the idea McDavid winds up in Montreal, “That would be nice, yes, but there’s still a long way to go.”
