NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Oilers & Bobrovsky’s Reasoning
Roslovic finds a fresh start in Toronto, Skinner leaves the NHL, and Bobrovsky’s contract demands help explain his choice of the Maple Leafs.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 14, 2026), we look at a number of NHL veteran moves. The Maple Leafs’ Jack Roslovic went from a late-ish contract with Edmonton (signed right as the Oilers were playing Calgary) to Toronto early in the offseason. Former Oilers player Jeff Skinner’s NHL chapter looks like it’s finally over, and he did a quick shift to Switzerland. Finally, the Maple Leafs Sergei Bobrovsky—despite being the headline goalie of the market and a back-to-back Cup winner in Florida—picked Toronto instead because of contract clause details.

Jack Roslovic’s Late Signing Turned Into a Big Leafs Move
Jack Roslovic finally signed his last contract for the Edmonton Oilers on October 8th, 2025. It was during the Oilers’ home opener against Calgary. The signing was announced during the second intermission, right before Edmonton lost 4–3 in a shootout. In Edmonton, he had a solid regular season (69 games, 21 goals, 15 assists, 36 points), but the playoffs weren’t great for him—he finished with just one assist across six games.
This offseason, he moved to Toronto fast. On July 1st, he signed a two-year deal with the Maple Leafs worth $4 million AAV. The big reasons sound pretty personal. He knows Auston Matthews from their U.S. U-18 days, and he’s stepping into a Maple Leafs group that feels “young, vibrant, and ready to win.” The fit is the question. Roslovic is a real offensive weapon, but how he handles Toronto’s system (especially if he’s pushed onto the top line) will decide whether he takes that next step.

Jeff Skinner’s NHL Run Looks Over, After a Rocky End in Edmonton
Jeff Skinner didn’t exactly get a smooth ride with the Edmonton Oilers. He was still capable and professional, but it was obvious by 2024-25 that his NHL chapter was winding down. With the Oilers, his ice time and role felt up and down. Even when he did manage to score, he’d quickly find himself sitting again, with the coaching message basically being “play better hockey.”
Now it looks like his NHL career is done. EHC Biel announced he signed a one-year deal through April 2027, after he terminated his Sharks contract in February and couldn’t land another NHL spot. Skinner ends his career with 379 goals and 712 points in 1,110 games, but his playoff resume is the part that stands out: he appeared in the playoffs only once, with Edmonton, playing five games and recording two points.

Why Bobrovsky Picked Toronto (Not Florida): The Contract Clause Twist
Sergei Bobrovsky was the biggest goalie name on the free-agent market this summer. A lot of people figured he’d stay with the Florida Panthers since he helped them win back-to-back Cups. Instead, he chose the Maple Leafs. In Florida, he established himself as an elite goaltender and helped the Panthers win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025. But the team still struggled with injuries that year, and his stats dipped significantly compared to his usual standards. He went 27-23-1 with a 3.07 GAA and .877 save percentage in 52 games in 2025-26.
One of the reasons he went to Toronto, according to reporter Daria Tuboltseva, was contract clauses that gave him protection. Florida’s offers shifted (including a two-year deal), but the Panthers only offered partial trade protection, and Bobrovsky apparently wanted a full no-trade clause. Toronto offered a longer deal of three years at $7 million AAV. They also gave him the full no-movement/no-trade protection he wanted, plus more money. The Maple Leafs basically outbid Florida on both the long-term commitment and the protection terms, and now they’re banking on Bobrovsky to be the real No. 1 starter alongside Anthony Stolarz.
