NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Jets, Oilers & Ovechkin?
McKenna is already under the Toronto microscope, Hellebuyck’s future is shifting, and Ovechkin begins his final NHL season.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap for October 5, 2026, there’s quite the mix. A young rookie already facing scrutiny in Toronto’s unforgiving spotlight. A goalie trade saga that’s become more about timing than money. And a legend setting the stage for one final, record-chasing farewell tour.

McKenna’s Missing Practices — And Toronto’s Already Noticing
Gavin McKenna’s rough start to his NHL career is getting magnified by something happening off the ice. He’s now missed three optional skates in less than a week. That includes a recent one that most of the team, stars and all, actually showed up for. He explained the first absence as just resting for a back-to-back. But with no points yet and some genuinely rough underlying numbers through three games, the pattern is starting to catch attention in a market that doesn’t exactly give rookies the benefit of the doubt.
Even outspoken host Sid Seixeiro weighed in, arguing that a struggling 18-year-old should do everything possible to improve rather than skip optional sessions his veteran teammates are showing up for. It’s still extremely early, just three games in, and there’s nothing confirming anything’s actually wrong. But in Toronto specifically, there’s no such thing as “too early” to become a storyline. McKenna’s already finding that out the hard way.

Does Hellebuyck’s “Win Now” Demand Open the Door for Edmonton or Carolina?
The Hellebuyck saga keeps evolving, and the latest wrinkle from Elliotte Friedman is that San Jose and Winnipeg actually talked trade, but it never went far. The real issue seems to be timing. Hellebuyck wants to land somewhere that can genuinely contend for a Cup within the next three years, and the Sharks still aren’t totally convinced they’re in that window, even after adding pieces like Nurse, Trouba, and Marchment this summer.
That whole “win in the next three years” demand actually opens the door to a couple of other interesting fits. Edmonton’s a natural mention given their shaky goaltending situation with Jarry, Levi, and an injured Andersen, plus their obvious Cup-or-bust mentality. Carolina’s another name worth watching too, as reigning champs who could theoretically use an upgrade in net, though they also just won it all without a true star goalie, so they might not feel the same urgency. Either way, wherever Hellebuyck lands, it sounds like the contention window is the real deciding factor now, not just dollars or draft capital.

Ovechkin Announces His Final NHL Season — And He’s Got History Still Left to Chase
Alex Ovechkin confirmed that 2026-27 will be his last NHL season, and he made it known right before Washington’s home opener, fitting for a guy entering year 22 in the league. His message to fans was genuinely touching: it was a family decision made over the summer, and he wanted to thank everyone before puck drop. He already owns the all-time goals record, but there’s still a lot on the table this year, catching Gretzky’s combined goals mark, closing in on 1,700 career points, and chasing down a handful of other milestones before he’s done.
This all comes after a pretty wild offseason for him. He wasn’t even sure he was coming back, and then his connections to Vladimir Putin resurfaced after he appeared in a Russian political ad in September. None of that came up in his retirement announcement, so it’s unclear if it played any role in the decision, or what’s next for him after this year. Either way, fans are getting one final season to watch one of hockey’s all-time great goal scorers do his thing.
