How Kyle Dubas Is Building the Penguins in a Unique Way

Nick Robertson scored twice in Pittsburgh’s opener. Maybe Kyle Dubas saw something Toronto never had room to find.

Here’s the trade worth starting with: Kyle Dubas picked up Nick Robertson from Toronto for a fourth-round pick, and in Pittsburgh’s opening-night 7-0 blowout over Philadelphia, Robertson scored twice. That’s a loud opening statement for a guy who never really broke through in Toronto.

What’s interesting here isn’t just one good game; it’s the whole philosophy Dubas seems to be running in Pittsburgh. The Penguins aren’t doing a full teardown rebuild. Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are all still there, so Dubas has to keep the team competitive while sneaking in younger talent wherever he can. His approach so far has been pretty specific: find young players who haven’t quite clicked elsewhere and give them a real shot to prove they belong.

Robertson Is an Example of How Dubas Thinks

Robertson’s the perfect example of why that works. In Toronto, he was never the problem: the depth chart was. The Maple Leafs had way too much competition for top-six jobs, and Robertson’s game was built for exactly that kind of role. That means he kept getting squeezed out before he ever really got traction. Dubas clearly saw something different: a player who didn’t need more patience; he needed an actual runway.

And Robertson’s not an isolated case either. Dubas has brought in a whole group of similar reclamation projects. They include Ville Koivunen, Hendrix Lapierre, Filip Hallander, goaltenders Arvid Holm and Arturs Silovs, plus Egor Chinakhov. Not all of these bets will hit; that’s just the nature of betting on undervalued young talent. But the strategy itself is interesting. Find guys who maybe just needed a different situation, not more development time.

Dubas Has a Thing for Hard-Workers, and Robertson Is Just That

There’s also a nice personal thread running through the Robertson pickup specifically. Dubas remembers exactly how hard Robertson worked trying to crack Toronto’s lineup, and when the chance came to grab him for a fourth-round pick, he took it. Funny how that works out. The GM who left Toronto under less-than-ideal circumstances is now quietly building something in Pittsburgh using the same kind of player evaluation and loyalty that defined his Toronto tenure.

If Robertson keeps producing as he did on opening night, this becomes one of those quiet little trades that ends up mattering a lot more than it looked on paper. Toronto fans don’t need to feel like they made a mistake letting him go; his fit just wasn’t there. But Pittsburgh might’ve found exactly what Toronto couldn’t give him: room to actually play.
