When Hockey Leaves the Public Couch

Sportsnet pulling NHL games off CBC feels like hockey going fully corporate. There will be shinier broadcasts, more tech, and bigger money that can grow the game and attract younger viewers. That’s great for revenue, production value, and global reach.

But it’s a cultural hit. Hockey Night on CBC was a shared Canadian ritual you could stumble into for free. Moving games behind private networks and paywalls risks losing that public, cross-generational moment and turns a national pastime into another commercial product.

Woll to Philly — Maple Leafs Flip Depth for Flexibility

The Philadelphia Flyers grabbed Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit for Samuel Ersson, Andrae, and a 2026 third-round pick. The move isn’t totally shocking since Philadelphia had scouted Woll before, and new management wanted depth in net. Toronto gets a young, mobile defenseman they liked, plus draft capital. The Maple Leafs believe the trade gives them roster and cap flexibility. Woll still has two years left at $3.66M, so the Flyers are buying a reliable option if he stays healthy.

The Maple Leafs quietly had choices. Artur Akhtyamov’s play and Dennis Hildeby’s waiver situation changed the goalie picture, making Woll expendable. There’s also worry about Woll’s durability despite obvious talent. So Philadelphia’s gamble makes sense, and Toronto’s banking on internal pieces and future upside.

Babcock Drama Could Cost the Oilers Players

The Oilers are waiting on the investigation into Mike Babcock, but the fallout’s already starting. Some players and agents are nervous and may steer free agents away if Edmonton hires him. Even inside the locker room, there’s a split. The leadership group backs the idea, but others aren’t sold and are quietly rethinking their future with the team.

If vets or UFAs decide to pass on Edmonton because of the coaching drama, the Oilers could lose out on key targets or even see current players hesitate to re-sign. That would turn a coaching hire into a roster problem. And if the investigation clears him, some worries may fade. But for now, it’s creating real uncertainty.
