NHL Trade Talk Recap: Hurricanes, Oilers & Maple Leafs Gamble

Hellebuyck rumours, Oilers trade talk, and a Leafs gamble on Raddysh—three NHL storylines shaping the market right now.

The Hurricanes might go all-in for Connor Hellebuyck to lock down their goalie worries. The Oilers are shopping Darnell Nurse and eyeing true top-pair upgrades like Bowen Byram (plus other names). And the Maple Leafs grabbed Darren Raddysh for a cheap draft pick. He has a high upside if he repeats that 70-point season, low risk if he doesn’t.

Can the Canes Make a Power Move for Connor Hellebuyck?

Carolina could try to swap top prospect pieces and a 2026 first for Connor Hellebuyck. And, it kinda makes sense. Hellebuyck reportedly wants out of Winnipeg, the Jets are listening, and Carolina’s cup hangover comes with real goalie questions (is Bussi the guy long-term? Andersen’s aging). Pairing Hellebuyck with Bussi would give Carolina one of the nastiest tandems in the league and keep them heavy favourites to repeat.

Winnipeg would be losing a legit franchise goalie, so they’d want serious blue-chip returns. And the package Wyshynski suggests (Nikishin, Nadeau, a first) would land them the kind of young, physical pieces they badly need. If Hellebuyck pushes to leave and Carolina’s willing to pay up, this trade actually feels realistic. It could be scary for the rest of the NHL.

Who’s Stepping Up If the Oilers Move Darnell Nurse?

Oilers want Nurse’s $9.25M off the books, not just to save cash, but to spend it on someone who can actually be a true No. 1. Bowen Byram is the sexy fit: left-shot, mobile, and a legit top-pair guy who’d slide next to Bouchard and let Ekholm move down a spot. He won’t be cheap, and Buffalo probably won’t do a straight-up swap, but it’s exactly the kind of upgrade Edmonton should be chasing.

Other names get tossed around. These include Morgan Rielly (less ideal fit), John Carlson (older but still top‑pair capable if he wants an East Coast stop), or even Zach Werenski (Norris-level, but nearly impossible to pry from Columbus). The Oilers aren’t just trying to shed salary. They’re angling to upgrade on the backend. And who they target will tell us if this is a true rebuild move or just roster tinkering.

Maple Leafs Snag Darren Raddysh — Career, Season Big Upside

Toronto grabbed Darren Raddysh from Tampa for a 2026 fifth-rounder. That feels like a pretty sweet, low-risk move. He’s a guy just had a 70-point season and can quarterback the power play while handling his own in the defensive zone. He’s a Toronto kid who can move the puck, fires a rocket from the point, and should plug into the Maple Leafs’ top-four minutes right away.

Risk is real, though. One great season doesn’t guarantee a repeat, especially as he’s pushing 30. Still, for a late pick, this trade makes a lot of sense. If Raddysh keeps producing, it’s a steal; if not, it’s a cheap gamble that won’t haunt the Maple Leafs.
